Often it is not because ChatGPT cannot find you, but because of how your buyers ask. In an Agenzy audit, a B2B compliance software company was named in 23.59% of 2,153 AI answers, but only once across 376 answers to questions that described a problem without naming a category. In the same Agenzy audit, its ChatGPT result in the United States was 11.03%. The fix starts with knowing which questions, assistants and markets leave you out.
What did one real audit find?
Most advice on this question lists general reasons. One published audit shows what the gap looks like in numbers.
Agenzy audited a B2B compliance software company on one day in July 2026 with 75 buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The prompts covered four markets: the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and one more EU market. None of them contained the company's name.
Across the 2,153 answers in the Agenzy audit, the company was named in 23.59%, sixth of 18 tracked brands. So it was present in the category, but far from the top, and the overall figure hid much larger gaps underneath.
That is the first lesson for anyone asking why ChatGPT does not mention their business: the answer is rarely all or nothing. You are usually present for some questions and missing for others, and the pattern tells you where to work.
Does the way a buyer asks change the answer?
Yes. In this audit, the question form was where the company almost disappeared.
Out of 376 answers to questions where a buyer described a problem without naming a category, the company in the Agenzy audit was named once. Buyers at that stage do not yet know what kind of product they need. They write something like "our audit evidence is spread across spreadsheets before every review", not "compliance software".
If your website and the pages written about you only use category words, an assistant has little to connect your company with the problem in the buyer's own words. When you test your visibility, test those problem questions separately, because a good overall score can hide a near zero on the questions buyers ask first.
Is ChatGPT different from other assistants?
It can be, and the difference is large enough to change your conclusion.
The same company that appeared in 23.59% of all answers in the Agenzy audit appeared in 11.03% of ChatGPT answers in the United States. That is less than half of its overall result, in one assistant and one market.
So "ChatGPT does not mention us" and "AI does not mention us" are two different findings. Before you decide what to fix, look at each assistant and, if you sell in several countries, at each market on its own.
Why should your test leave out your company name?
Because buyers who do not know you yet cannot type your name.
Questions that already contain your name show how an assistant describes you, not whether it brings you up on its own. Every prompt in the Agenzy audit left the company's name out, which is why its 23.59% and its single mention in 376 problem answers describe real discovery, not recognition.
Keep a few named questions in your own test as well. They show whether the description of your company is correct, which matters once a buyer has heard of you and asks about you directly.
How do you find out why ChatGPT skips your business?
Run a small, fixed test before you change anything on your site.
- Step 1Write buyer questions in three forms. Problem questions that describe a pain without a category, category questions such as "best compliance software for a 50 person company", and comparison questions between two named alternatives. Keep your own brand name out of most of them.
- Step 2Freeze the list. Save the questions before the first answer, so a later check compares the same thing.
- Step 3Ask every question in several assistants. Use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity, with a fresh conversation for each question.
- Step 4Split the results three ways. Count your mentions by question form, by assistant and, if you sell in several countries, by market.
- Step 5Look at the sources. Note when an answer cites your own page while it names a competitor, because that page is read and still loses.
- Step 6Start with the gap that costs the most. Usually that is the question form or the market closest to your revenue, not the one with the lowest score.
Repeat the same frozen list after your changes. Only the same questions, asked the same way, show whether the answers moved.
How does EntityRise measure this for a company?
EntityRise is an AI visibility audit for agencies and companies that shows how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity describe and recommend a company and what to improve first.
Each audit uses up to 40 buyer questions across five AI assistants: 15 high-priority questions go to all five and up to 25 more to one each, for up to 100 answers kept with their sources. Before anything is measured, the business profile, the buyer topics and the question set are confirmed and then locked. The AI Visibility Index weighs recommendation at 30%, mention at 20%, prominence at 20%, citation support at 15% and description accuracy at 15%.
The result is a PDF report of around 40 pages with the visibility analysis assistant by assistant, the competitor comparison and the ordered list of what to improve. You can start the audit for your own company, and agencies can run it for their clients under their own name. EntityRise measures and guides; the improvements happen on your own pages and in your own marketing work.
Common questions
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?
Often because of the way buyers ask. In the Agenzy audit, a company named in 23.59% of AI answers overall was named once in 376 answers to questions that described a problem without a category. Test problem questions, category questions and comparison questions separately to see where you are missing.
Why does ChatGPT mention my competitors but not me?
Look at the questions and the sources. If a competitor is named for problem questions and you are not, compare how each website describes the buyer's problem. If an answer cites your page and still names the competitor, that page is the first one to study.
Does asking ChatGPT about my company by name show my visibility?
No. Questions with your name show how you are described, not whether you are found. The 75 prompts in the Agenzy audit left the company's name out for that reason.
Is my visibility the same in every AI assistant?
No. In the Agenzy audit, one company was named in 23.59% of all answers but in 11.03% of ChatGPT answers in the United States, so one assistant in one market never stands for all of them.
How many questions do I need to test?
Enough to cover each question form and each assistant your buyers use. EntityRise uses up to 40 buyer questions across five assistants, and locks them before the first answer.
